As George Washington was getting ready to step down as the first president of our brand-new republic, he wrote his Farewell Address with the help of Alexander Hamilton. In a letter to the American people first published in a Philadelphia newspaper, and later reprinted in papers across the country, he addressed the issue of party loyalty over loyalty to nation. Political parties were starting to emerge by the time he was stepping down and Washington felt that the biggest threat to government was loyalty to the party over a nation and its people. Moving forward to present day, it seems our country has taken party loyalty to the extreme. Not only have we seen partisan politics going on in our House of Representatives and Senate, but it has also progressed into our local political arenas. Americans are now driven to vote based on party loyalty, regardless of what is best for our nation and/or what is best for our local towns and villages.
More and more voters in the Town of Wawarsing have had enough of the two major political parties. Right now, of the 7,911 registered voters, 2,611 identify as neither Democrat nor Republican. This represents 37% of registered voters. There were no clear majorities at this year’s Republican and Democrat Caucuses. Out of 150 votes cast at each of those caucuses, winners and losers were decided by a three-vote margin. None of those 2611 voters, including NOPs (No Party) had any opportunity to choose a candidate for those two lines. So, we decided to start the No Party line in their honor. The No Party Candidates were chosen by petition signatures of a cross section of all Town of Wawarsing registered voters including many of those who did not identify with a particular political party.
In the July 6, 2023 Shawangunk Journal, the editorial board headline stated, “Vote for People, Not Parties.” They wrote, “Labels, and the assumptions that go with them, just don’t fit at the local level. … We have to get to know the person, look beyond the party label, and see how they want to improve, or maintain, the towns we live in.”
This is exactly the reason why the NO PARTY line was created.

While not everyone has the time for such a commitment, everyone can get and be involved. Get to know your candidates. If your goals for the town align with theirs then you can help them in their race for public office. Talk to family and friends and get them out to vote. Your candidates can't win this race without your help. Remember - every vote counts. Even something as simple as making phone calls can make a big difference in an election. Everyone can make a difference for a better town.
